A cable dragging across rocks has a finite amount of travel before the armour is worn through – the wear rate is measurable and remaining lifetime predictable
A vibrating cable may not be bad news in itself, but it’s the precursor to fatigue. If vibration extends to Vortex Induced Vibration degradation will accelerate – all is measurable as an indication of dynamic locations.
We measure dynamic strain, we measure vibration – together we can use these to measure whether individual cable components are in fatigue and like abrasion use to predict remaining life.
Exposure itself is not a degradation mechanism but it’s a risk enhancer, particularly for external damage from anchoring and fishing – we report on the exposure status of every section.
Our patented approach to measuring the integrity of the cable comes from monitoring the vibration response to the power flowing through the cable – it’s a great indicator of historic abuse, wear and degradation.
A cable gets easily trapped on a rock if exposed and dragging in the tide – if the tide increases sufficiently we get a skip over rocks which releases a lot of stored energy. These damaging events are clearly bad news – we report every location experiencing it.
If the cable is subject to twisting again it tells us about dynamic events taking place – we can carefully locate every instance.
