Indeximate enhances monitoring of SSEN’s critical Orkney Subsea Power Cables, Boosting Network Resilience.

  • Following a successful trial period, Indeximate and SSEN have reached a Master Service Agreement to enable further monitoring of subsea power cable assets across the north of Scotland.

LONDON / INVERNESS, 26 January 2026: Indeximate, the leading provider of fibre sensing-based subsea power cable health monitoring, today announced it has been supporting Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Distribution to deliver enhanced subsea power cable monitoring of critical island interconnectors in Orkney. The project is an important part of SSEN’s commitment to ensuring network resilience and access to clean energy for the island communities.

The initial work has focused on two subsea cables which form an essential part of SSENs Northern Orkney 33kV ring network serving the Northern Isles and include cables which traverse some of the most energetic tidal channels in Europe. The subsea cables are exposed to some of the most challenging subsea conditions in the UK. Their long-term resilience and continuous operation are a lifeline for island communities and ensures electric power can reliably replace diesel generators.

Two of SSEN’s cables monitoreed out of Westray

SSEN had previously received OFGEM SIF funding to develop Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) to provide real-time insight into cable movement and environmental loading to support asset integrity. While trials showed potential, the volume of raw data (terabytes per day) made it technically and economically unfeasible.

Recognising the challenge and turning to Indeximate, SSEN engaged the business in 2024 recognising the patented data compression engine, Indeximation®, could make continuous cable monitoring viable in practice. Installed on Westray in October 2024 and using only a 1 Mbps 4G connection to continuously transfer compressed DAS data to the cloud for automated analysis, Indeximate’s services have removed a long-standing barrier to using fibre-sensing as a low-cost security solution for vital subsea power cable connections to SSEN customers in Orkney.

Indeximate’s cloud-based analytics platform, Scattersphere® combines with the Indeximation technology to processes terabytes of DAS data into clear, map-based assessments of cable condition and long-term behaviour. Instead of raw data visualisations, SSEN has access to a practical and continuous picture of cable health over time, identifying exposure risk, movement, cable fatigue, and behavioural trends that can directly inform preventative maintenance decisions. Quarterly health reports allow SSEN to allocate resource efficiently and prioritise interventions in the areas that matter most.

Before and After responses for strain & vibration during summer and winter conditions

Following the success of the first reporting cycle, SSEN has extended the monitoring agreement through to 2028 and established a Master Services Agreement with Indeximate. This will help to support the rapid deployment of the approach on other critical subsea cables which SSEN have identified. The further rollout of this agreement will support and enhance SSEN’s investment approach on these assets as it develops its ED3 business plan for the regulated period between 2028 to 2033.

Chris Minto, Director at Indeximate, said: “Subsea cables in Orkney operate in some of the most challenging tidal conditions anywhere in the UK. Monitoring these cables to prevent failure can only realistically be done using fibre sensing. Indeximate’s technology has allowed SSEN to extract actionable insight from massive volumes of data generated by DAS fibre-sensing to support planning and asset management. We are delighted that SSEN has recognised the value of our technology for ensuring the health of their subsea power cable assets.”

(David Taylor, Senior Investment Planning Manager – Submarine Cables at SSEN Distribution), said: “The subsea cables connecting the northern Orkney Islands are critical to ensuring a safe and reliable electricity supply for these communities, and maintaining their resilience is a key priority for SSEN. With the support of Indeximate’s innovative technologies, fibre sensing has given us a clear understanding of how these assets respond to the extreme tidal forces in this area. This has allowed us to gather additional asset data which will support our future investment strategies and plans for cable maintenance. We’re pleased to be able to strengthen our relationship with Indeximate, and further support the long-term reliability of our subsea network for the communities we serve.”

Indeximate and SSEN will continue to collaborate throughout the current regulatory period to extend the approach to additional submarine cables and support the long-term resilience strategy for Scotland’s island communities.

About Indeximate

Indeximate is a technology company that redefines the efficiency of electricity transmission through the prediction and prevention of subsea cable failure. Headquartered in the UK, with a presence in the US, Indeximate has developed proprietary technology that gathers, compresses and deeply analyses Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) data that enables the saving of millions of dollars annually for offshore wind farm developers, undersea power HVAC and HVDC power cable operators, and Interconnector operators.

Indeximate is in a phase of growth; building a scalable, highly deployable product and currently focused on preventing the current huge and unnecessary cost of cable failure in the offshore wind industry.

About Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Distribution

Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution plc (SHEPD) holds a licence under the Electricity Act 1989 for the distribution of electricity in the north of Scotland including all of Scotland’s islands. It has a statutory duty to provide an economic and efficient system for the distribution of electricity and to ensure that its assets are maintained to ensure a safe, secure and reliable supply to customers.

The electricity distribution network in the north of Scotland covers a quarter of the UK landmass, powering over 780,000 homes and businesses across 13 local authority areas. The network serves island communities across 60 inhabited Scottish islands with SSEN owning, operating and maintaining a fleet of over 110 dedicated subsea cable installations. The licence area stretches northwards from Loch Lomond and Dundee up to Orkney and the Shetland Islands. It is a unique region, containing the farthest western and northern mainland points in Great Britain
