Cable Health Assessment Guidelines
In the absence of any published standards on performing cable health checks, the insurance industry in particular is left at the mercy of watching what asset owners actually use. Yes, CIGRE and DNV do mention cable monitoring in their two relevant standards, but the sum total is less than 100 words.
We set out to help educate in 2023 by offering our publication “Cable Health Assessment Requirements” which offers recommendations for a standardised approach. It is NOT intended to be self serving and only mentions fibre optic sensing in passing. Rather it’s an output aimed publication – i.e. what outputs should asset owners achieve in order to provide assurances on the health of the cable.
It’s our hope that an indepedent body will pick this up to offer direct advice to insurers – to achieve this we published with a creative commons licence to enable others to take, adopt and augment.
In support of the publication we also issued a couple of blog articles covering some of the issues with insurance, regulation and cable health as well as our suggestions for improving the situation.
We plan an update to this in Q4 2024 so if you would like to contribute please drop us a line.
